Generic Medicines - Guilty or Not Guilty?

India tops as the largest exporter of generic medicines and drugs. However, in our court today, Generic medicines have come with the following charges,

They are not as safe as brand-name drugs Generic medicines are not as potent as brand-name drugs Generic medicines take longer to act in the body Generic drugs are not good as they are low priced

In this argument, let’s try and break this misbelief with data-backed facts regarding the usage of Generic Medicines.

The term ‘generic’ refers to a product, especially a drug, which does not have a trademark which means it is open to use by any pharmaceutical company for the preparation of medicines. For example, 'paracetamol' is a chemical ingredient that is found in many branded painkillers and is often sold as a generic medicine in its own right. According to U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA-approved generic medicines work in the same way and provide the same clinical benefit and risks as their brand-name counterparts. A generic medicine is required to be the same as a brand-name medicine in dosage, safety, effectiveness, strength, stability, and quality, as well as in the way it is taken. Generic medicines also have the same risks and benefits as their brand-name counterparts.

As per Statista, India is the largest provider of generic drugs. India has exported pharmaceuticals worth 24.44 billion U.S. dollars. In the current environment, generic medicines and pharmaceutical products account for more than half of all pharmaceutical items sold globally. This is because generic drugs are neither patented nor trademarked, therefore there is no monopoly of one brand over the drug. It also aids in lowering the cost of manufacturing medicine and making it available to the public at a lower cost while maintaining the same degree of quality as the brand-name drug.

To conclude, Generic Drugs can be as effective as their brand name alternatives and Patients can save serious money with Generic Medicines. With that being said, generic medicines are falsely accused because of the lack of knowledge and we relieve them from all the above-mentioned charges today.
